What is a busser?

A busser, also known as a busboy or busgirl (though these terms are becoming less common due to their gendered nature), is a member of a restaurant's support staff whose primary responsibility is clearing and resetting tables. Their duties generally include:

  • Clearing tables: Removing dirty dishes, silverware, and other items from finished tables.
  • Bus tubs: Transporting soiled dishes and silverware to the dishwashing area using designated bus tubs or carts.
  • Resetting tables: Preparing tables for the next diners by wiping them down, replacing silverware, napkins, and condiments, and ensuring they are clean and presentable.
  • Assisting servers: Helping servers with tasks like bringing water, bread, or other items to tables. They may also help clear extra items from tables during service.
  • Maintaining cleanliness: Keeping the dining area clean and organized, including sweeping floors and removing trash.
  • Assisting with other tasks: Depending on the restaurant's size and needs, a busser might help with other tasks such as setting up for service, restocking supplies, or helping with light cleaning.

Key Skills and Qualities:

  • Physical stamina: The job involves a lot of walking, carrying, and lifting.
  • Teamwork: Bussers work closely with servers and other support staff.
  • Attention to detail: Maintaining cleanliness and ensuring tables are properly set requires attention to detail.
  • Efficiency: Bussers need to work quickly and efficiently to keep up with the pace of service.
  • Positive attitude: A positive and helpful attitude is essential for creating a pleasant dining experience for customers.

While often considered an entry-level position, bussing can be a valuable stepping stone to other roles in the hospitality industry, such as serving, bartending, or even management. It provides valuable experience in teamwork, customer service, and the fast-paced environment of a restaurant.
